It’s Because Of People Like Obi, Mark and Abacha that IBB Was Compelled To Annul MKO’s Election– FFK

Former minister Femi Fani-Kayode has strongly criticised Peter Obi over comments linked to the pro-democracy group NADECO.

In a post via X, Fani-Kayode argued that NADECO members played a major role in resisting military rule after the annulment of the June 12 1993 election, which was widely believed to have been won by MKO Abiola. According to him, many activists were jailed, exiled, or killed during that period.

He accused Obi of not standing with pro-democracy forces at the time and instead supporting the system led by Sani Abacha. He also criticised David Mark, linking him to decisions and statements made during the military era.

Fani-Kayode further claimed that individuals like Obi, Mark, and Abacha contributed to the circumstances that led former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida to annul the election, a move that triggered years of unrest across Nigeria.

He expressed disappointment that some former NADECO figures are now associated with political groups he believes do not reflect the sacrifices made during that struggle.

The former minister concluded that the events of that era should not be forgotten, stressing that those who fought for democracy paid a heavy price and deserve recognition rather than criticism.

In his words, “It is because of people like Peter, David Mark and Abacha that the military Head of State at the time, General Ibrahim Babangida, was compelled to annul Abiola’s election after which the nation was thrown into chaos and turmoil with many innocent and defenceless Nigerians killed over the next 6 blood-soaked and terrifying years….See More
