It Is Noteworthy That Tinubu Has Cautioned Govs Against Using Public Resources to Build Flyovers—Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has echoed a position he has consistently advocated regarding infrastructure spending by governments.

In a post on his official X account on Saturday, August 1, 2026, Obi welcomed Tinubu’s reported caution to state governors against committing scarce public funds to constructing unnecessary flyovers in areas with little traffic while more urgent developmental needs remain unmet. He argued that governments should focus on rehabilitating existing infrastructure and completing ongoing projects before embarking on new ones.

According to him, “It is therefore noteworthy that President Bola Tinubu has now cautioned state governors against committing scarce public resources to constructing unnecessary flyovers in areas with little traffic while neglecting more pressing developmental needs.”

Obi, however, argued that the same principle should apply to the Federal Government. He maintained that several ongoing projects of the current administration could be considered unrealistic or “white-elephant” projects, while many critical highways and existing infrastructure across the country remain in poor condition.

Drawing from his tenure as governor of Anambra State, he said his administration prioritized completing viable projects inherited from previous governments, stressing that governance should be measured by the completion and usefulness of projects rather than by who initiated them..See_More
