Iran Claims Massive Strike on US Command Base in Syria as Middle East Conflict Spirals Further

According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Thursdays, July 16, 2026, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for a strike targeting a United States special operations command centre in the Al-Tanf area of southwestern Syria, describing the operation as retaliation for recent US military attacks.

According to Iranian state media, including Press TV, the IRGC said the attack targeted the American military facility located near the strategic border junction connecting Syria, Jordan and Iraq.

Iranian officials claimed the operation caused significant damage, including the destruction of radar systems, several special operations helicopters and the deaths of a large number of US military personnel.

However, the claims have not been independently verified, and there has been no immediate confirmation from the US military or the Syrian government regarding the reported damage or casualties.

The Al-Tanf garrison has long been regarded as a strategically important location because of its position at the tri-border crossing and its role in previous US-led operations against extremist groups in the region.

The US military announced in February that it had completed an orderly withdrawal from the Al-Tanf base as part of a broader transition of its mission in Syria.

American officials said at the time that operations would continue from other locations while maintaining the ability to respond to security threats in the region.
