Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, has stated that Nigerians should stop addressing him as a Hausa man

According to a report by Punch on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Bishop Kukah said he is a Nigerian from Anchuna in Ikulu Chiefdom, located in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. He stated clearly that he is not Hausa by origin.

Speaking further, Kukah said he appreciates the efforts of the Anambra State government in improving education. He stated that, based on available statistics, Anambra is performing very well in education compared to many other states. He said the level of investment in education by the state government is commendable and should be encouraged.

Bishop Kukah said as the new Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra State, he is committed to improving the institution. He added that his goal is not just to meet the university’s expectations but to go beyond them. He said he will work with others to ensure the university achieves greater success and higher standards.
