According to a report by The Sun on Monday, May 18, 2026, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has stated that he is fully prepared to contest against Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election and does not see the challenge as a source of fear or concern.
He maintained that his political ambition remains focused on presenting an alternative direction for the country through the platform of the SDP.
Adebayo explained that although both he and Tinubu are from Nigeria’s South West region, the SDP would not rely on ethnic or regional sentiments during the election campaign.
He said the country’s current economic hardship has pushed many Nigerians beyond tribal considerations, as citizens are now more worried about meeting their daily needs and surviving the worsening conditions affecting households across the nation.
He stressed that millions of Nigerians are currently dealing with rising food prices, unemployment, inflation, and increasing costs of living, adding that these challenges have become more pressing than issues of regional identity.
According to him, the focus of ordinary citizens is now centred on economic relief and better opportunities rather than political alignments based on ethnicity.
The SDP presidential candidate further described his party as one with a different ideological foundation from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He accused the APC of placing more emphasis on political calculations and electoral success than on policies that directly improve the welfare of Nigerians.
According to Adebayo, the SDP is committed to governance that prioritises the wellbeing of citizens, insisting that the party’s policies are designed to address economic hardship and improve living standards.
He argued that governance should focus on creating stability in areas such as employment, transportation, housing, and social welfare rather than concentrating solely on political victories.
He also criticised the approach of the current administration toward economic reforms, particularly policies that have increased hardship for many Nigerians.
He maintained that decisions affecting subsidies and other economic measures should be implemented with careful consideration of their wider effects on ordinary citizens and the economy as a whole.
“A social democrat won’t wake up and remove subsidies without thinking about the impact on transport, food, housing, jobs and people’s savings. But, if you are in the APC, your focus is on winning elections and congratulating yourselves afterward,” he stated….See More
