I Served My Life Imprisonment In Aba Prison, Spent A Year In Kirikiri And Port Harcourt Prison—Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to the sentencing of Nnamdi Kanu, urging calm and reminding the public that a life-imprisonment verdict does not foreclose hope, dialogue or eventual resolution. Sani shared his views in a post on his X handle on Friday, November 21, 2025, drawing from his own past experiences in detention.

In his post, he wrote: “Sentencing a man to life imprisonment is not the end of his life. Some of us have been through life imprisonment and we survived it.” Recalling his years behind bars, he stated: “I served my own life imprisonment in Aba Prisons, Abia State, after spending a year in Kiri Kiri and Port Harcourt prisons.”

Sani explained that his treatment during incarceration varied, but he encountered support from many. He said: “The inmates and warders treated me well, except for some few tough guys.” He argued that despite the gravity of the judgment, there remains an opportunity for reconciliation. Emphasising the need for political solutions, he added: “There is still room for dialogue to resolve the issue in the interest of peace.” Sani concluded with a message of resilience, insisting that imprisonment does not represent finality. In his words: “Life imprisonment is a phase and not the end.”
