According to a report by The Cable on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, fresh claims about final hours of Sani Abacha have reignited debate decades after his sudden death.
The new account by Dennis Amachree challenges long-standing conspiracy theories, offering a detailed narrative that disputes claims of poisoning plots or foreign involvement surrounding Abacha’s passing in 1998.
Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death, remains controversial, often associated with military rule and human rights concerns, while speculation about his death has persisted for decades.
According to Amachree: ‘He died of Cardiac arrest during intercourse’.
In his book, Amachree recounted that the incident occurred during early hours at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Abacha was reportedly with a woman before events suddenly changed.
He explained that during an intimate moment, the woman noticed something was wrong as Abacha became unresponsive, prompting confusion and concern as the situation rapidly escalated within the residence.
The former intelligence officer said panic followed immediately, as the woman reportedly left quickly after informing security personnel a vehicle had been requested, and guards unknowingly facilitated her departure.
Amachree revealed that by the time officials began reconstructing events, the key witness had already left Abuja, with operatives later locating her in Lagos for questioning about the incident.
During interrogation, she reportedly said, “I did not kill him, he died on top of me,” insisting the death was sudden and unexpected, denying any wrongdoing in the situation.
The account attributes Abacha’s death to cardiac arrest, presenting it as a medical event rather than foul play, contradicting widely circulated narratives suggesting elaborate plots or external involvement.
