Gumi Blows Hot: Reacts To Nigerian Police Recruitment Dress Code, Says the Hijab Should Be Included

Prominent Islamic cleric, Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, has called on key national institutions to review the Nigeria Police recruitment dress code, arguing that it excludes Muslim women.

In a statement shared via his official Facebook page on Sunday April 25, 2026, Gumi expressed concern over the stipulated attire for prospective recruits, which includes white shorts, a white vest, and white canvas shoes. According to him, the requirement does not accommodate Islamic dress principles, particularly for female applicants.

The cleric addressed his appeal to several institutions, including the Police Service Commission and the National Assembly, as well as Muslim advocacy groups such as the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria and the Muslim Rights Concern.

Gumi argued that the current dress code effectively sidelines Muslim women who observe modesty requirements in line with Islamic teachings. He emphasized that the use of the hijab and full-body covering is central to Muslim identity and should be respected within national institutions.

He further pointed to practices in countries such as the United Kingdom, noting that Muslim women in some Western nations are allowed to wear the hijab while serving in official capacities, including in security agencies.
