From Onitsha Market To Nkpor Junction, It Used To Be N300, Bus Drivers Collect #1000 A Drop -Trader

Disinterest continues to trail business and commercial activities in Anambra State following Governor Charles Soludo’s directive compelling traders to return to markets in a bid to end the lingering sit‑at‑home order.

Despite the government’s push, traders say rising transportation costs are crippling their ability to sustain business.

Speaking with VANGUARD which was reported on Tuesday, February 24 2026, Okechukwu Okafor, a trader in Onitsha, lamented that fares which once stood at ₦200 now range between ₦500 and ₦1000. He noted that routes such as Onitsha Main Market to Nkpor junction, formerly ₦300, now cost between ₦800 and ₦1500.

Okafor stressed that traders are being forced to spend between ₦1600 and ₦2000 daily just to commute to and from markets, even as customer patronage remains low.

He emphasized that unless the state government steps in to regulate tricycle and bus operators, traders will continue to suffer losses that make returning to the markets unsustainable.

According to Okafor, “From Onitsha Main Market to Nkpor junction, which used to be N300, bus drivers collect between N800 and N1000, a drop.”…..See More
