Dino Melaye, a Nigerian lawyer and politician, a former senator and former member of the Nigerian National Assembly, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide a clear and official explanation for the reported removal of the Minister of Finance. He stressed that transparency remains a fundamental principle of responsible governance.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Melaye argued that in well-established democracies, the dismissal of senior government officials is never left unexplained. According to him, citizens have a right to understand the reasons behind such critical decisions, especially when they involve key figures in the nation’s economic management.
Melaye’s remarks were direct and raised serious concerns. He questioned whether the minister’s removal was connected to an alleged inability to conceal the diversion of $24 billion, which he equated to about ₦34 trillion, from Nigeria’s revenue. Referencing the World Bank, he suggested that the figures being discussed should not be dismissed lightly.
The statement has since sparked widespread reactions, drawing attention to ongoing concerns about accountability and transparency in public finance. While some Nigerians have supported his demand for openness, others have cautioned against drawing conclusions without verified evidence.
The former lawmaker emphasized that the Ministry of Finance plays a central role in shaping Nigeria’s economic stability and policy direction. Any leadership change within such a critical institution, he noted, carries significant implications for both local and international confidence in the country’s financial system.
Observers say the lack of a clear official explanation has created room for speculation. In governance, silence on sensitive matters often fuels public suspicion and weakens trust in institutions.
As of now, the Federal Government has not issued a detailed response addressing the concerns raised or clarifying the reasons behind the minister’s removal. Many believe that providing a transparent explanation would help strengthen public confidence and demonstrate accountability.
Melaye’s statement has added to the broader conversation about the need for openness in government decisions, reinforcing calls for clarity, responsibility, and trust in public leadership….See More
