During an interview on SYMFONI, Human Right Activist and Politician, Omoyele Sowore gave a detailed account of what he said unfolded in Abuja immediately after the protest, describing a chain of events that placed him at the center of a rapidly escalating confrontation with security agencies.
He said that the situation moved from a public demonstration to a pursuit across the city and ended with his arrest in a highly visible location near the courts, a sequence he presented as critical to understanding his legal case.
According to Sowore, “after the protest, I was hunted all over Abuja; they were shooting at me. I went to the police station to get bails for some arrested protesters, but they refused, and then they arrested me in front of the Federal High Court”.
He explained that once the protest ended, his immediate focus was on those who had already been taken into custody, prompting him to go directly to a police station to seek their release. According to him, that effort to secure bail became part of the wider confrontation with law enforcement.
Sowore stated that officers declined to grant bail to the detained protesters, a decision he said prolonged their custody and heightened tensions around the protest aftermath. He noted that this refusal was one of the moments that shaped what followed.
He told the interviewers that after leaving the station, he was himself taken into custody, an action he said occurred in front of the Federal High Court, making the arrest both public and symbolic.
According to Sowore, the location of the arrest was significant because it placed the incident directly within the space of the judiciary, which he later turned to for redress. He said this reinforced his decision to pursue the matter legally.
The activist linked the sequence of events to his broader claim that the response to the protest went beyond lawful policing. He said the way the situation unfolded became central to the case now before the courts.
Sowore also noted that several protesters experienced extended detention, which he said further illustrated the challenges faced by participants in the demonstration.
