As protests continue across Iran, British lawmaker Tom Tugendhat has suggested that the country’s clerical leadership may be preparing for two starkly different scenarios: escalating confrontation or a potential retreat from power.
Tom Tugendhat, a Conservative Member of Parliament and former UK Minister of State for Security, said Iran’s ruling ayatollahs could be positioning themselves either to intensify repression or to make contingency plans should their grip on power weaken.
His remarks were shared in a post on his verified social media account as unrest persists in multiple Iranian cities.
Tugendhat disclosed that he had raised the issue directly with the British government, questioning the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) minister, Hamish Falconer, about reports circulating within policy and security circles. He said Falconer’s response reflected growing concern in London over the direction of events inside Iran.
The comments come amid sustained demonstrations driven by economic hardship, political grievances, and anger over the authorities’ handling of dissent.
In recent days, protests have increasingly featured slogans calling for fundamental political change, signalling a more direct challenge to the clerical establishment that has ruled Iran since 1979.
