During his interview on SYMFONI, activist Omoyele Sowore raised concerns about Nigeria’s reliance on foreign military assistance, framing it as a challenge to national sovereignty.

Sowore questioned the practicality of expecting international intervention to solve localized security issues.

He cited Sambisa Forest as an example, highlighting that if a foreign force were tasked with clearing one region, there would be no guarantee that other areas facing similar threats would receive attention.

He specifically mentioned Edo State as an illustration, asking rhetorically who would be responsible for clearing forests or territories left unaddressed by external actors.

According to the activist, outsourcing security responsibilities undermines local accountability and weakens domestic institutions tasked with protecting citizens. He suggested that true security solutions require homegrown strategies rather than temporary external interventions.

Sowore further argued that inviting foreign powers to take operational control in Nigeria could result in unintended political consequences. He warned that dependence on such forces could amount to ceding authority to external actors, affecting governance structures.

He framed the issue in terms of national governance, asserting that accepting foreign military rescue implicitly involves relinquishing control over critical aspects of the state.

The activist also emphasized the symbolic impact of foreign involvement, noting that reliance on external forces could signal a lack of confidence in Nigerian leadership. This, he argued, could erode public trust in local government institutions.

Sowore cautioned that foreign assistance is not a sustainable solution. While it might provide temporary relief in specific crisis zones, it cannot substitute for comprehensive reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security agencies and operational capacity.

He reinforced the idea that national security challenges are ultimately a domestic responsibility. According to him, citizens and elected officials must take ownership of the protection of their communities rather than depending on outside powers.

Sowore stressed that the long-term stability and governance of Nigeria depend on internal commitment to self-reliance. He stressed that ceding authority to foreign actors, even under the guise of assistance, could fundamentally reshape the country’s political and security landscape.
