Former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Yusuf Buratai has stated that Nigerian troops are making notable progress in the battle against terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminal activity affecting different parts of the country.
Speaking in a report published by The Sun on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Buratai attributed the recent successes of the military to improved coordination among security agencies and a renewed level of dedication among personnel involved in ongoing operations nationwide.
According to the retired army chief, security forces are now operating with better intelligence gathering and stronger collaboration between units, leading to more effective military operations on the ground. He explained that the current strategy adopted by the armed forces has helped increase the pressure on criminal groups operating across several regions.
Buratai noted that the security situation is gradually improving as troops continue to intensify efforts against armed groups. He particularly referenced the North-West region, where banditry has remained a major security challenge for years.
Discussing military activities under Operation Fansan Yamma, Buratai said troops have increased offensive operations against bandits by targeting their camps and hideouts located in forests and remote communities. He explained that the operations are part of a broader and sustained campaign designed to weaken criminal networks and reduce their ability to regroup or launch attacks.
He further stated that soldiers have become more proactive in clearing areas believed to be used as safe havens by armed groups. As part of these efforts, he mentioned a recent operation in Katsina State where troops reportedly confronted suspected bandits and successfully recovered more than 200 stolen cattle.
According to Buratai, such achievements reflect the growing impact of continuous military pressure on criminal elements. He emphasized that the armed forces are not only responding to attacks but are also carrying out strategic clearance operations aimed at restricting the movement and activities of bandits across affected regions.
In his words:
“The troops are not just reacting to attacks; they are going into the forests, clearing hideouts, and denying bandits freedom of movement….See More
