According to TVC News, Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a firm and far-reaching directive restricting Nnamdi Kanu’s access to any form of digital device, declaring that he may only use such devices in the future with the express approval and supervision of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). The ruling, delivered during a detailed session on custody conditions, forms part of the most stringent communication controls ever placed on a high-profile detainee in Nigeria.
Justice Omotosho stated that the decision was based on compelling intelligence reports presented by federal authorities, which alleged that Kanu’s previous use of digital devices—including phones, laptops, and radio transmission tools—played a major role in coordinating protests, disseminating incendiary statements, and influencing unrest across the Southeast. The judge noted that several violent episodes were linked directly to digital broadcasts associated with Kanu and the IPOB media network.
According to the ruling, Kanu is completely barred from possessing or operating any digital device on his own. This includes smartphones, tablets, computers, and any form of electronic communication equipment. Should there arise a legitimate need for him to use one—for legal documentation, communication with his lawyers, or participation in court procedures—such access must be applied for, approved, and monitored by the NSA.
Justice Omotosho stressed that the supervision must be strict, real-time, and comprehensive, with security officials ensuring that no unauthorized messages, instructions, or encrypted communications can be transmitted. The judge maintained that these measures are necessary to prevent what the court described as “the misuse of digital platforms for instigation, propaganda, or mobilization with security implications.
