The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, on Tuesday issued a renewed warning about what he described as an impending terrorist threat targeting the South-West, North-Central and South-South regions.
According to The Punch, he cautioned that, according to intelligence available to him, militants were gradually surrounding these areas and were merely waiting for a “signal” from foreign backers before launching coordinated attacks.
At a press conference held at Oodua House in Ikeja, Lagos, Adams explained that the magnitude of the threat could pose a serious danger to the more than 60 million Yoruba people unless immediate and decisive measures were taken.
He reportedly stated that the situation should not be underestimated, stressing that the indicators of looming danger were visible across several states.
He pointed out that, in his view, signs of potential infiltration and security breaches had been observed from Kogi and Kwara to Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos, as well as parts of Edo and Delta states.
Adams was said to have warned that these developments suggested a coordinated pattern that required urgent attention from both the government and security agencies.
Further talking, he said, “Merchants of death have surrounded the 60 million inhabitants of this geographical space (southwest). The bloodthirsty maniacs do not have good intentions for the peace-loving people of our area.
“Rather, they’re waiting for the signal from their foreign sponsors to invade this land, kill mercilessly, and take over people’s ancestral inheritance.”
Referring to intelligence reports, he cautioned that terrorists were preparing to shift from their hideouts in the forests into major urban centres. He explained that, based on information gathered, the militants were already mobilising to abandon their forest bases with the intention of infiltrating towns and cities.
