Corruption In Nigeria Sports: The $1.2 Million Stadium In Kebbi Is An Embarrassment -Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reacted to allegations that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) mismanaged $1.2 million funds given to them by FIFA to build a stadium. The stadium, constructed in Birnin Kebbi, was in a sorry state as Nigerians queried how the body could build such a shambolic structure. Obi described the stadium as a “national embarrassment,” noting that it was sickening and shameful that corruption had seeped into the sports sector.

Peter Obi revealed that he had faced a similar problem during his tenure as the governor of Anambra State when FIFA allocated funds to build a stadium in Awka. According to him, he had even allocated land to the Federal Ministry of Sports for the said project, but the project was never executed. He stated that those who accuse him of demarketing Nigeria are, in fact, the ones who thrive on corruption and deceit. The real demarketers of Nigeria, according to Obi, are the incompetent leaders.

Speaking on the Kebbi stadium, he said:

“The so-called $1.2 million stadium in Kebbi State is a national embarrassment. The structure in no way reflects the funds claimed to have been spent on it.

We cannot continue to watch our sports decline while corruption flourishes. Our youths are our most prized assets, yet we have destroyed their future and then turned around to label them ‘Yahoo boys,’ when, in truth, the leaders who have robbed them of their future are the real ‘Yahoo’ of our nation.”

He emphasized that Nigeria must embrace integrity and accountability to truly develop. “Until then, our nation will continue to crawl where it should be soaring,” Obi added, noting that Nigeria would not move forward without integrity and accountability.
