Former Anambra State Governor and prominent political figure, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the treatment of Nigerian youths, stating that the country’s leadership has failed to nurture its most valuable resource. In a report shared by PM NEWS on Monday, October 27, 2025, Obi lamented the widespread neglect of young people, blaming systemic corruption and poor governance for the erosion of their future.
Speaking on the issue, Obi said he finds it troubling that many leaders are quick to label struggling youths as “Yahoo boys,” a term commonly used to describe internet fraudsters.
He argued that such stigmatization ignores the root causes of youth desperation, which stem from a lack of access to quality education, healthcare, employment, and recreational opportunities.
Obi emphasized that the real damage to Nigeria’s image comes not from whistleblowers but from corrupt officials who mismanage public funds and deprive citizens of basic services.
Obi further stated that those who expose corruption should not be accused of “demarketing” the country. Instead, he believes that the true demarketers are those in power who continue to steal from the public purse while failing to deliver meaningful development.
He warned that unless integrity and accountability are restored across all sectors, Nigeria will remain stagnant and unable to reach its full potential.
Obi said, “Our youths are our most prized assets, yet we have destroyed their future and then turned around to label them ‘Yahoo boys.’ The leaders who rob them are the real ‘Yahoo’ of our nation. Rebuilding Nigeria requires integrity and accountability in every sector. Until then, our nation will continue to crawl where it should be soaring.”
