According to a report by The Sun on Thursday, September 17, 2026, the Anambra State Government has renewed its dispute with former governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over the financial position of the state at the conclusion of his administration in 2014.
The latest disagreement emerged after the state Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, alleged that the Obi administration left behind several outstanding external loan obligations. According to Mefor, eight separate loan facilities worth approximately $123.77 million remained unpaid when Obi left office in March 2014.
The commissioner said the loans had been secured to finance projects across several sectors, including healthcare, education, erosion management, agriculture and community development. He explained that Anambra has continued to meet repayment obligations on some of the facilities. However, he said fluctuations in the exchange rate, together with accumulated repayment commitments, had increased the value of the outstanding debt to more than N127 billion.
Mefor acknowledged that borrowing could be justified when borrowed funds are properly invested in projects capable of improving citizens’ living conditions. However, he questioned whether the loans secured during Obi’s administration produced sufficient benefits for residents. He cited continued concerns surrounding public schools, healthcare facilities and water infrastructure as areas requiring attention.
The Soludo administration has also challenged Obi’s repeated assertion that he handed over more than N75 billion in savings, investments and other assets to his successor. The state government said it expects documentary evidence capable of establishing how the amount was calculated, noting that previous assessments of Anambra’s financial records did not verify the figure.
The dispute also extends to an alleged N2.13 billion ecological fund. Obi has maintained that he intentionally preserved the money in a designated account for erosion-control projects before leaving office. However, the current administration said documents available to it do not substantiate the former governor’s account of the funds.
Mefor directly challenged Obi to produce evidence supporting his claim about the state’s savings. He said, “Obi’s claim that he left more than N75 billion in savings. I challenge the former governor to provide the records supporting the figure.
