Somebody Was Telling Me That Peter Obi Left $50M After He Left Office And I Told Him 2 Things -Umahi

Minister of Works, has dismissed claims that former deserves special recognition for reportedly leaving more than $50 million in Anambra State’s treasury when he completed his tenure as governor. According to Umahi, such a claim should not be viewed in isolation without considering the state’s financial obligations at the time.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the minister explained that the issue came up during a discussion with someone who praised Obi’s financial record. Umahi said he responded by pointing out that leaving money in government accounts does not necessarily mean the state’s finances were healthy if there were unpaid debts waiting to be settled.

He said, “Somebody was telling me when we had a small debate that Peter left $50 million after he left office and I told him two things.”

Umahi went on to state that Obi’s successor, , had reportedly explained that although funds were left in the treasury, the state still owed contractors significant amounts. According to Umahi, once those outstanding obligations were paid, the financial position became negative, making it inappropriate to celebrate the savings without considering the liabilities.

The minister also argued that government performance should be assessed based on the impact on the lives of citizens. He questioned the value of preserving large financial reserves if residents continued to face economic hardship, industries were struggling, and road infrastructure remained inadequate.
