Former Department of State Services (DSS) operative, Dennis Amachree, has criticised Major Hamza Al-Mustapha’s continued defence of late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, describing one of his explanations surrounding the former military ruler’s death as unconvincing and humorous.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News on Wednesday, 29 July, 2026, Amachree responded to Al-Mustapha’s rejection of the account contained in his book on Abacha’s death. He argued that the former Chief Security Officer had consistently sought to defend Abacha long before the publication of the book, insisting that his latest denial was not surprising.
Amachree said, “Even before I wrote the book, Major Mustapha has always defended his boss because he came up with that Palestinian security man shaking the head of state and he started changing.”
The former DSS officer maintained that Al-Mustapha had repeatedly presented explanations aimed at protecting the legacy of the late military leader. According to him, the story involving a Palestinian security officer was one of several accounts that failed to convince him and others who have followed the long-running debate over Abacha’s final moments.
The exchange follows renewed public attention generated by Amachree’s book, which offers his perspective on the events surrounding Abacha’s death in June 1998.
