Human rights activist Daniel Atayi has said the recent deadly attack on Otukpo in Benue State has altered his perception of claims made by United States President Donald Trump regarding the killing of Christians in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, 30 July, 2026 while reacting to the attack by gunmen in Otukpo, Atayi expressed deep concern over the continued killings and destruction in Benue communities. He said the incident left him shaken and convinced that urgent action is needed to stop the bloodshed and protect vulnerable residents from recurring attacks.
According to him, “I never wanted to believe in the speech of Donald Trump, the American president when he said there is genocide in Nigeria against Christians. But what I have witnessed with my eyes, I can tell you that the American government was true in that statement.”
Atayi’s remarks come in the aftermath of another violent attack in Otukpo, where gunmen reportedly killed several residents, injured others and forced many people to flee their homes.
