In a recent interview on Channels TV, on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, shared his views on the political future of the South-East within the All Progressives Congress (APC). He argued that political decisions taken by major parties today could have long-term implications for the region’s chances of occupying the nation’s highest offices.
Okonkwo maintained that the South-East should carefully assess the political opportunities available to it ahead of future elections. He said the region must consider how current alliances and party decisions could influence its prospects in subsequent electoral cycles.
Speaking during the interview, Okonkwo stated, “In 2031, he may not support any Igbo person to be the APC’s vice-presidential candidate.” He made the remark while explaining why he believed many people in the South-East should carefully evaluate their political choices before the next general election.
According to Okonkwo, his position was based on his personal assessment of the country’s political landscape and the possible direction of leadership succession within the APC. He argued that political inclusion and equitable representation remain important issues in Nigeria’s democracy.
