Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed concern over what he described as a double standard in the way Nigerians assign responsibility for major security incidents involving the abduction of schoolchildren.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Saturday, July 11, 2026, the governor compared the public reaction to the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction with the response that followed the kidnapping of schoolchildren in Oyo State during his administration.
Makinde argued that public opinion appeared to apply different standards depending on who was in office at the time of the incident. According to him, when the Chibok abduction occurred, many Nigerians and members of the international community held then-President Goodluck Jonathan responsible and demanded urgent federal action.
Recalling the situation, he said, “When Chibok happened, it was the fault of President Jonathan, they went all over the world asking Jonathan to bring back the girls.”
The governor, however, questioned why the same approach was not adopted when children were later abducted in Oyo State. He maintained that instead of directing criticism at the Federal Government, many people blamed the state administration.
