Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and NDC presidential candidate, shared a story about a recent experience at an airport, which he used to highlight what he sees as the increasing separation and lack of trust among Nigerians.
During an interview on WithChude on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Obi expressed that this incident strengthened his view that the nation is becoming more divided. He pointed out that Nigerians now look at each other with skepticism and animosity, emphasizing that re-establishing national unity ought to be a top priority.
The ex-governor of Anambra asserted that his vision for Nigeria includes creating a community where all citizens receive equal treatment, no matter their political, ethnic, or religious backgrounds.
He recounted, “Recently at the airport, some airport staff came and locked my vehicle. I told them, ‘It’s me.’ One of them replied that he didn’t care, but I pointed out, ‘Look at the cars of others,’ and you could see them engaging with each other like…, ‘Who is this person?’ We have fractured our nation, fostering animosity among us. That is why I consistently say I aim to restore unity.”
Obi suggested that this occurrence illustrated a larger problem within the country, where divisions have increasingly influenced how citizens interact with one another. He mentioned that the environment of distrust and bitterness has diminished national solidarity and made it harder for Nigerians to view themselves as a single community.
