I Gave Her Food And While She Was Eating, I Forced Myself On Her” — That Was The Assignment I Was Sent To Do

A man arrested in connection with a sexual assault case in Nigeria has told police he was acting on instruction, saying, “I gave her food and while she was eating, I forced myself on her. That was the assignment I was sent to do.”

The statement was made during interrogation after the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force. According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred when the victim, a young woman, was lured to a location under the pretense of receiving help. The suspect allegedly provided her with food, and while she was eating, he assaulted her.

Police say the suspect is cooperating with investigators and has mentioned the names of individuals who allegedly hired him. Authorities have not confirmed the identities of those mentioned, stating that the investigation is ongoing and that more arrests may follow.

The victim received medical attention immediately after the incident and is currently receiving counseling and support from a local advocacy group. Medical reports have been submitted as part of the evidence in the case.

Sexual assault remains a serious offense under Nigerian law. Section 357 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 1 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015, prescribe severe penalties for rape, including life imprisonment upon conviction. Police say the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

The case has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for swift justice and for those who allegedly hired the suspect to be identified and prosecuted. Women’s rights groups have also renewed calls for stronger protection mechanisms and faster prosecution of gender-based violence cases.
