Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested a suspected internet fraudster, popularly called a “Yahoo boy,” after allegedly finding a woman tied up in his room.
The arrest was made during a raid on a residential apartment in [location not disclosed] following a tip-off from residents who reported suspicious activities at the property. According to the NSCDC, officers acted quickly to avoid further harm and took the suspect into custody at the scene.
A video circulating online shows NSCDC officers at the apartment as the woman was found. Authorities have confirmed that the woman was rescued and is receiving medical and psychological support. Her identity has not been released to protect her privacy.
The NSCDC said the suspect is being investigated for alleged involvement in internet fraud and for unlawful restraint and assault. Officials stated that preliminary findings suggest the suspect may have lured the woman to his apartment under false pretenses before restraining her.
“Upon receiving credible intelligence, our operatives moved swiftly and arrested the suspect. The victim has been rescued and is safe. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances and to establish if other persons are involved,” an NSCDC spokesperson said.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue. The NSCDC said the case will be charged to court once investigations are concluded, and that they are working with other security agencies to verify the suspect’s claims and digital evidence recovered from the scene.
Cases involving unlawful restraint and violence are prosecutable under the Criminal Code Act and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015. If found guilty of internet fraud, the suspect could also face charges under the Cybercrimes Act.
