In This Coalition, People Were A Bit Scared That ADC Was Like Peter Obi’s Party — Ralph Nwosu

ADC founder Ralph Nwosu has said that within the current coalition of opposition, some members had worried the party had become too closely associated with Peter Obi because of the strong support the party gave him in 2023.

Speaking on Symfoni TV, Nwosu, while reacting to Obi’s recent exit from the ADC, explained that the party was the only party that formally collapsed its structure to support Obi and the Labour Party before the 2023 presidential election.

He said the party even funded an endorsement event despite having limited resources because they believed in presenting a credible alternative to Nigerians.

Nwosu noted that the decision of ADC created the perception that it was aligned with Obi, to the point where those who later joined the coalition expressed concern about the relationship. He added that the party’s record of supporting Obi went beyond politics, pointing to their role in jointly rejecting the results of the 2023 presidential election alongside the PDP and the Labour Party.

He argued that the willingness of the ADC to sacrifice their own platform showed their commitment to building a broad-based opposition, not to promoting any individual. According to Nwosu, the party’s history of putting national interest ahead of their own survival was what made it a trusted vehicle for the coalition, even if that same history fueled suspicion among some members.

In his words, “We supported Peter Obi, not just now, but before and so if there’s anybody that people will even think, okay, even in this coalition, people were a bit scared that ADC was like Peter Obi’s party.”
