Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States in autumn 2026 at the invitation of President Donald Trump, according to announcements following Trump’s recent trip to Beijing. The planned return visit signals continued high-level diplomacy between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump made the invitation public on May 14, 2026, during a state banquet at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Addressing Xi and First Lady Peng Liyuan, he said, “It is my honor to extend an invitation to you, Madam Peng, to visit us at the White House this September 24, and we look forward to it”. Trump later confirmed the date to reporters, describing the visit as “reciprocal” and tied to the two countries’ trade relationship.
China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the plan. Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters on May 15 that Xi would visit the U.S. in autumn at Trump’s invitation, adding that both sides should work to “foster a favourable atmosphere and build up more outcomes”. Chinese state media described 2026 as a potential “historic, landmark year” for bilateral relations. c18590e7
The announcement follows Trump’s two-day state visit to Beijing on May 14-15, 2026, the first by a U.S. president to China in nearly nine years. Trump was received with a ceremonial welcome at the Great Hall of the People, including a 21-gun salute and inspection of troops. Xi hosted a state banquet and bilateral talks covering trade, Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, and Taiwan.
During the talks, Xi told Trump that China and the U.S. should be “partners not rivals” and that the relationship is “the most important in the world”. Trump said the two sides had “extremely positive and constructive discussions” and called the relationship “going to be better than ever”.
The September 24 date for Xi’s U.S. visit was repeatedly cited in official reports. If it proceeds, it would mark Xi’s first trip to the United States since 2023.
The planned exchange comes as both sides seek to stabilize ties amid ongoing disputes over trade, Taiwan, and the Iran conflict. White House officials said the Beijing meeting included agreement that “the Strait of Hormuz must remain open” and that “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon”.
Trump’s visit also included a tour of the Temple of Heaven with Xi and a business delegation featuring CEOs from Tesla, Nvidia, and BlackRock….See More
