“Kanu Will Get The Justice He Deserves” – Presidency Dismisses #FreeNnamdikanuNow Campaign

‎According to a report by Daily Sun on Friday, October 10, 2025, the Presidency has dismissed calls for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that his ongoing trial will continue in accordance with the law. This comes as activist Omoyele Sowore announced plans to stage a #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest at the Presidential Villa on October 20, calling it a “historic” demonstration for justice.

Reacting to the planned protest, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga criticised Sowore’s approach, describing him as “an anarchist masquerading as a rights activist.” He cautioned that the government would not tolerate any action capable of disrupting public order, stressing that Kanu’s trial for alleged treason must proceed without interference. Onanuga also accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of political opportunism for endorsing the protest, stating that true statesmanship requires respect for judicial processes.

He reaffirmed the government’s confidence in the Nigerian judicial system and maintained that justice would be served through legal means, not through street protests or political agitation. “While the wheel of justice can sometimes be grindingly slow, partly caused by Kanu’s lawyers, Nnamdi Kanu will eventually get the justice he deserves for his alleged transgressions,” Onanuga concluded.
