2027 presidential aspirant and National Leader of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has expressed support for the reported senatorial ambition of activist and political commentator, Aisha Yesufu, stating that more activists should participate directly in politics.
Sowore made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, May 11, 2026, while responding to questions regarding Yesufu’s political involvement and her decision to seek elective office.
During the interview, Sowore described Yesufu’s entry into partisan politics as a positive development, noting that individuals who believe they can contribute to society should not stay away from the political process. “By the way, I support the fact that she has finally joined the race to become a senator,” he said.
When asked what advice he had for the activist, Sowore reiterated his support and reflected on his long-standing conversations with her about political participation. “I totally support her. I’ve always told her that good people, people who believe that they can do things, should get into politics,” he stated.
According to him, Yesufu had previously opposed the idea of activists contesting for political office and often criticised activists who ventured into electoral politics: “She used to say that she has no business running for office. She used to condemn those of us who are activists who run for office. She doesn’t want to support anybody but her own candidate, which she’s entitled to.”
The AAC leader added that he was pleased that the activist had reconsidered her position regarding direct political participation. “But I’m glad finally she has come to that position and the realisation,” he added.
Sowore also disclosed that he once shared a similar belief before deciding to actively participate in politics years ago: “I used to feel that way too before 2016 or so, that activists don’t have business in politics. But the business of politics is actually the biggest activism that has to be done to save society.”
He maintained that political engagement remains one of the most effective means of influencing governance and societal development. “So I totally support her and I hope she wins,” Sowore stated.
Despite expressing support for Yesufu’s ambition, Sowore added that he believed she had joined the wrong political platform: “Even though I think that she’s in the wrong party. She should have joined our party. She’s in the wrong party, there’s no question about that….See More
