Political economist Prof Pat Utomi has raised serious concerns about the growing gap between Nigeria’s ruling class and its suffering poor. Speaking on Symfoni TV, he drew attention to a troubling contradiction at the heart of Nigerian governance.
According to him, while ordinary Nigerians endure hardship, those in power continue to live in extreme luxury. He asserted that leaders who publicly ask the poor to exercise patience are simultaneously acquiring private jets, fleets of vehicles, and yachts; symbols of extraordinary wealth accumulated amid widespread poverty.
In his words: “I want to say what I feel in the lived experiences of people. Tell me that something is fundamentally wrong with a system that says to poor people, be patient. And those who are saying be patient to them are buying new jets. Those who are saying be patient to them are buying new fleets of cars.
