In an interview on The Legacy Series, Colonel Anthony Otu-Nyiam (rtd) stated that he was one of the officers that attempted to overthrow the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida on April 22, 1990
Col Nyiam said among the people who took part in the failed coup attempt were 11 military officers and some retired servicemen. He said they also brought armed robbers from Benin into the group to help them carry out the coup
Col Nyiam stated that during the operation the armed robbers helped the group gain access to key locations, including FRCN and Dodan Barracks.
In Col Nyiam’s words: “The officers we used were only 11 officers who were around Lagos and we had to resort to using civilians. We had to get someone to go to Benin and get armed robbers and the remarkable thing about it is that they were the most courageous on the night of that action. We got ex-service men also. On the night of the coup those who were the most successful in their actions were the armed robbers because it is what we used to get through to FRCN and Dodan Barracks….See More
