In a recent interview with The Sun on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the 2023 general elections, Alhaji Sani Yusuf Yabagi, has criticized the state of Nigeria’s oil refining sector and the continued fuel challenges facing the country.
He stated that the presence of the Dangote Refinery has helped to reduce the severity of the current situation, according to him, without the refinery, Nigerians would have been facing a much worse fuel crisis that could have made daily life extremely difficult for many people and suggested that the private refinery has played a key role in easing pressure on fuel supply.
Yabagi expressed concern over Nigeria’s state-owned refineries, he noted that the country has four refineries that were built with billions of dollars over the years, yet none of them is currently producing petrol and described the situation as a major failure in the management of national resources.
He questioned why such a situation has continued without strong corrective action, he said it is worrying that the refineries remain non-functional despite the huge amount of money invested in them, according to him, this has forced the country to rely heavily on fuel imports and private sector solutions.
The ADP candidate stated that the development raises questions about accountability in the oil sector, he argued that the continued collapse of the refineries should not be ignored, especially given their importance to Nigeria’s economy and energy security.
”Because you have Dangote refinery that’s why the situation is even like this, otherwise, the situation would have been disastrous for an average Nigerian to just live. We spent billions of dollars on four refineries and not one is producing petrol and the president did not see anything wrong with that,” he said….See More
