Former senator Shehu Sani has criticised the reaction of some Nigerians following a controversial post by United States President Donald Trump, describing it as an example of what he called a “colonial mentality.”

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) today, Sani reacted to an image posted by Trump in which the US president depicted himself in a manner resembling Jesus Christ. The post quickly generated widespread backlash online due to its religious implications.

According to Sani, some Nigerians initially supported and defended Trump after the image was shared. He noted that despite the criticism the post attracted globally, certain individuals online justified the content and dismissed concerns raised by others.

Sani further observed that after Trump deleted the image following the backlash, the same group of people shifted their stance, now defending him for taking the post down. He described this as contradictory and reflective of inconsistent public behaviour.

The former lawmaker argued that such reactions contribute to how Nigerians are perceived by others across Africa. He stated that this pattern reinforces a narrative that portrays some Nigerians as overly deferential to foreign figures, particularly Western leaders.

He added that this is one of the reasons some Africans view Nigerians as having a “colonial mentality,” suggesting that there is a tendency to defend or excuse actions by influential foreign personalities, even when those actions spark controversy.
