The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened as its National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has accused the party’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Illya Damagum, of breaking the party’s constitution.
According to a report by Arise News on Thursday, October 2, 2025, in a letter dated October 1, 2025, Anyanwu warned Damagum against taking actions that go against the rules set out in the PDP Constitution of 2017 (as amended). He said that some decisions made recently, especially the dissolution of state executives in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, were not valid because they did not follow the proper process.
According to Anyanwu, the party’s constitution gives the National Secretary the power to issue official notices for meetings of the National Working Committee (NWC) and ensure that decisions are properly carried out. He insisted that these responsibilities cannot be taken over by any other officer.
He explained that the press release announcing the dissolution of the two state committees and the setting up of caretaker committees was illegal, since the meeting that produced those decisions was not called by him, as required by the constitution.
Anyanwu described the move as “provocative and unacceptable” and warned that any action taken by an “illegally constituted NWC” would be null and void. He advised Damagum to respect the rules and lead the party in line with its constitution, reminding him that ignoring the law could damage the PDP further.
“It is high time you retraced your steps,” he wrote, “and conduct yourself and the affairs of our party in strict compliance with the PDP constitution.” See, More, Here>>>>
