King Charles III has said he was assured that Nigerian jollof rice ranks as the best on the African continent, adding a popular Nigerian phrase, “Naija no dey carry last,” during a state banquet held in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
The British monarch made the remarks on Wednesday while delivering a speech at the grand banquet hosted at Windsor Castle as part of Tinubu’s historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom.
In a speech that blended diplomacy with humour, King Charles reflected on Nigeria’s vibrant culture and its growing global influence. He noted that during a recent gathering, he was strongly convinced by guests that Nigerian jollof stands above others in the long-running West African culinary rivalry.
“I was firmly assured that the jollof was only the best, Nigerian of course,” the King said, drawing laughter from dignitaries present at the event.
He went further to strike a cultural chord with Nigerians by adding, “Naija no dey carry last,” a phrase widely used to express confidence and excellence.
The comment was met with warm reactions from attendees, highlighting the monarch’s effort to connect with Nigerian culture on a more personal level.
Beyond the humour, King Charles praised Nigeria’s contributions to British society, pointing to the influence of Afrobeats music, Nollywood films, and the achievements of Nigerians in various sectors across the UK.
President Tinubu, who is on his first state visit to Britain since assuming office, is expected to hold high-level talks with British officials focusing on trade, security, and strengthening bilateral relations.
The visit marks the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in nearly four decades, highlighting renewed diplomatic ties between both nations…..See More
