A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Ladan Salihu, has raised fresh concerns about alleged political maneuvers aimed at weakening the People’s Democratic Party ahead of future elections. Speaking during a recent interview on Arise News, Salihu claimed that remarks allegedly made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, suggest a deliberate effort to destabilize the opposition party.
During the interview, Salihu discussed the ongoing internal challenges facing the PDP and argued that some political actors may be contributing to the crisis. He alleged that Wike has been playing a strategic role in the situation, pointing to comments reportedly made in the presence of the President. According to Salihu, the remarks indicate that efforts to weaken the party may have been discussed openly.
Salihu referenced a claim involving the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, which he said has not been denied by the FCT Minister. Quoting the governor’s alleged statement, Salihu said, “Makinde said the FCT Minister, Wike, right before the president, told him he was enlisting Makinde to destroy the PDP, and Wike has not denied that statement.” He suggested that the absence of a public rebuttal from Wike has continued to fuel speculation and debate within political circles.
The ADC chieftain argued that if the claim is accurate, it raises serious concerns about the role some political figures may be playing in the internal struggles of opposition parties. He stressed that the stability of political parties outside the ruling government is essential for maintaining democratic balance in the country.
Salihu also pointed to the broader implications of weakening opposition platforms, warning that such developments could affect Nigeria’s democratic environment. According to him, a strong opposition is necessary to provide checks and balances, hold those in power accountable, and promote healthy competition within the political system.
His comments have added to the ongoing debate surrounding the internal divisions within the PDP and the wider political landscape. While some observers view the crisis as part of the party’s internal power struggles, others see it as a reflection of deeper political realignments ahead of future elections.
As discussions continue across the political spectrum, analysts say the controversy highlights the importance of transparency and open dialogue among political leaders, particularly at a time when public confidence in democratic institutions remains a key concern……See More
