According to a report by Arise News, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the persistent friction between the Anambra State Government and Onitsha market traders continues to generate significant discourse among various stakeholders.
Offering his perspective during a television segment, Elias Odoemena, the Convener of the Igbo Union Nzuko Ndi Igbo, discussed the implications of market shutdowns and their toll on the local merchant community.
Odoemena highlighted that commerce is deeply embedded in the cultural identity and livelihood of the Igbo people. To illustrate the profound commitment these individuals have toward their enterprises, he said, “If you give an Igbo man a chance, he will open his shop on Sunday.”
He clarified that this sentiment serves as a testament to the industrious nature of these traders and their eagerness to engage in commerce at any available opportunity.
The union representative pointed out that the majority of business owners are dissatisfied with the ongoing market closures, particularly those occurring on Mondays.
He emphasised that these merchants rely on daily transactions to provide for their households. While many are eager to maintain regular business hours, they are currently paralysed by the security risks associated with the sit-at-home mandates prevalent in sections of the South-East.
Furthermore, Odoemena clarified that the trading community does not endorse the sit-at-home orders. He noted that the union has consistently condemned policies that stifle economic productivity.
Nevertheless, he remarked that the instinct for self-preservation often outweighs commercial interests, as traders prioritise their physical safety amidst a climate of fear.
The convener suggested that the government should engage more directly with established market leaders before implementing major policies that impact the retail sector.
He believes that a collaborative dialogue could lead to sustainable resolutions, as open communication is essential for tackling security issues and restoring confidence between the state and the workforce.
He concluded by noting that these difficulties are not isolated to Onitsha but are felt across various commercial hubs in the region. Since business serves as the primary financial pillar for many families, there is a collective desire for markets to return to standard operations.
Odoemena reaffirmed that traders are willing to align with government initiatives that foster safety and economic development, provided their specific challenges are met with empathy and constructive engagement.
