Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reiterated his long-standing commitment to party unity and internal democratic principles, stating that he has consistently respected and supported the outcomes of presidential primaries throughout his political career.
According to a report by Leadership Newspaper on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Kwankwaso reflected on his involvement in previous presidential contests and the positions he adopted afterward. He recalled that during the 2014 presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he emerged second behind Muhammadu Buhari, who later secured victory in the general election. He added that Atiku Abubakar came third, Rochas Okorocha placed fourth, while the late Sam Nda-Isaiah finished fifth in that contest.
Kwankwaso further highlighted his participation in the 2019 presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he contested for the party’s ticket. Despite not emerging as the candidate, he said he went on to support Atiku Abubakar, who won the primary, and subsequently served as the Northern campaign coordinator. He described this decision as part of his consistent effort to prioritize collective goals over personal ambition.
He emphasized that his political conduct has always been guided by loyalty to party structures and a broader sense of national responsibility. According to him, the ability of political actors to unite after competitive primaries is critical for electoral success and long-term stability.
Kwankwaso noted that respecting internal processes not only strengthens party cohesion but also builds public confidence in democratic institutions. He maintained that his track record demonstrates a willingness to align with party decisions in the interest of progress and governance.
He stated,
