Former Nigerian Senator Shehu Sani has emerged as a prominent voice in the escalating online controversy pitting Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti against contemporary superstar Wizkid. In a poignant X post on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Sani paid tribute to Fela’s enduring legacy, framing it as a bulwark against oppression while subtly addressing the recent disrespect stirred by the feud.
Sani’s intervention comes at a time when social media is ablaze with debates over generational divides in Nigerian music. “The greatness of Fela is beyond Music and Entertainment. He was a symbol of resistance against oppression and injustice.He survived imprisonment, torture and death in the pursuit and the defence of his principles.He planted the seeds of freedom enjoyed by the generations after him.He is incomparable with any artist living or dead,” Sani wrote in his post.
According to Punch, the saga ignited when Seun Kuti, Fela’s son and a musician himself, accused Wizkid’s fans of tarnishing his father’s name. “These Wizkid fans are dragging Fela’s name in the mud,” Seun stated in a viral video, sparking a heated exchange. Wizkid, known for his global hits like “Essence,” fired back dismissively, claiming, “I’m bigger than Fela ever was.”
