Fresh tension has emerged in Rivers State politics after former governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of breaking an alleged agreement not to seek a second term in office.
Wike claimed the understanding followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention during the impeachment crisis that rocked the state.
Speaking on the ongoing political dispute, Wike alleged that Tinubu stepped in at the height of the crisis between Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. According to him, the intervention led to a peace arrangement aimed at stabilizing governance in the state.
Wike stated that as part of the understanding reached at the time, Fubara had agreed not to pursue a second term. However, he claimed that recent developments suggest the governor may now be reconsidering that position, prompting renewed friction within the political structure of the state.
The former governor noted that while no individual can be legally barred from contesting an election under Nigeria’s constitution, the situation has exposed deeper political alignments and disagreements behind the scenes. He implied that trust and political commitments were central to the fallout.
The Rivers political crisis has been marked by divisions between Wike and Fubara, despite the latter having emerged as Wike’s political successor. Disagreements over control of the state’s political machinery and loyalty among lawmakers have fueled ongoing instability.
