In an interview with Daily Independent on Thursday, February 19, 2026, human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has welcomed new participants at a recent protest at the National Assembly, stating that some of the new faces are former politicians, including supporters of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Sowore explained that many politicians act according to their personal interests, they tend to get involved when their concerns are affected but often mock activists when their interests are not at stake, despite this, their participation in the protest is seen as a positive development.
He stated that among the attendees was former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, who brought his son to join the demonstration, Sowore sees this as a chance for politicians to understand the work and challenges of civil society activism.
He encouraged his team to welcome these new activists, stating that their presence helps broaden the movement, for seasoned activists, protesting is a daily commitment and a key part of their purpose.
Sowore stressed that the movement remains inclusive, open to anyone willing to contribute to civil society causes, he said the engagement of former politicians and new participants strengthens the collective effort and highlights the growing support for civic activism in Nigeria.
He stated that while some politicians may only stay involved when it serves their interests, their participation provides an opportunity to witness activism firsthand,
”Whenever their interest is affected, they know what to do and when it’s not affected, they mock those of us who protest. Former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi even brought his son for the protest. We had other supporters of former president Muhammadu Buhari there. We welcome our new activists,” he said….
