In a recent interview on Arise TV, the National Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party, Dan Nwanyanwu, shared a personal account of his time supporting late businessman and politician, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, during a critical period in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.
According to Nwanyanwu, “When MKO Abiola had a swollen leg, he was admitted to an Eko Hospital in Lagos, Room 437,” he recalled, describing his role in attending to Abiola during his hospitalization.
Nwanyanwu explained that he was among the few individuals who stayed close to Abiola during his medical treatment, ensuring he received care and support. He emphasized that his presence was a reflection of the deep trust and dedication shared among activists and leaders committed to Nigeria’s democratic cause.
He noted that during those days, political struggle required both personal sacrifice and constant vigilance. According to Nwanyanwu, being present for Abiola in the hospital was part of a broader effort to maintain morale, coordinate political activities, and ensure that the pro-democracy movement continued despite challenges.
The ZLP chairman highlighted that these experiences underscored the human side of political activism, showing that behind public figures are individuals whose health, safety, and well-being must be protected by their closest allies.
While recounting the incident, Nwanyanwu stressed that the story is not meant to glorify himself but to illustrate the commitment, solidarity, and courage required of those who worked alongside Abiola to advance democracy in Nigeria.
