When I Went to America, I Met a White Man and He Begged Me to Stay Back and Marry Him – Adewunmi

Yoruba Nollywood actress Juwon Adewunmi has revealed details about her extended absence from the film industry, linking it to a life-changing trip to the United States where she met the man who would later become her husband.

Speaking in an interview on the Talk to B podcast hosted by Abiola Adebayo, Adewunmi explained that her time away from Nollywood was not accidental but the result of personal decisions tied to marriage, relocation, and family life.

She said her visit to America marked a turning point in her life and eventually led to an unexpected romantic relationship.

According to her, while she was in the United States, she met a white man who quickly developed strong feelings for her and expressed his desire for her to remain in the country and marry him.

In her words: “When I went to America, I met a white man and he begged me to stay back and marry him.”

Adewunmi explained that although she was moved by his interest, she did not immediately agree to his proposal. Instead, she insisted that if he truly intended to marry her, he would need to follow Nigerian cultural traditions.

She said she made it clear to him that marriage was not just between two individuals but also involved family, respect, and traditional processes that must be observed.

She added that she told him he would have to travel to Nigeria to formally meet her family and carry out the necessary introduction and marriage rites according to Yoruba custom.

In her words: “I told him if he really wanted to marry me, he must come to Nigeria first. He must meet my family and do everything properly the Yoruba way.”

According to Adewunmi, the man agreed to her conditions without hesitation and eventually traveled to Nigeria, where the marriage process was completed with her family’s involvement.

She said the relationship progressed from there, and they eventually got married after fulfilling all required traditional and formal procedures.

Adewunmi further revealed that after their wedding, her husband advised her to remain patient with relocation procedures, particularly regarding immigration documentation.

She explained that he encouraged her not to rush her move but to ensure that she had the proper legal papers that would allow her to travel freely between Nigeria and the United States without restrictions.

She added that he was supportive of her career as an actress and assured her that marriage would not interfere with her professional life in Nollywood.

According to her, he promised to give her the freedom to continue acting while also adjusting to married life abroad.

Adewunmi noted that this understanding played a major role in her decision to balance both her personal and professional commitments, even as she spent more time outside Nigeria.
