Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has once again taken aim at the United States and its role in Middle East hostilities, questioning U.S. intentions and credibility following a brief but intense period of conflict in 2025. In a tweet posted on his official X account on January 6, 2025, Khamenei framed recent diplomatic overtures from Washington as contradictory and rooted not in genuine peace efforts but in fear of Iran’s resilience.
The comments come against the backdrop of the 12-Day War—a period of direct hostilities involving Iran, U.S. forces, and Israeli military action earlier in 2025. Although Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire brokered in part by U.S. diplomatic pressure, Tehran has repeatedly emphasised that this pause in fighting was the result of Iranian strength, not capitulation. Iranian officials have described the ceasefire as conditional and the result of opposing forces failing to achieve their objectives, rather than a diplomatic breakthrough.
Iran’s leadership has positioned its narrative around national resistance and defiance, portraying Tehran as having defended its sovereignty in the face of “aggression” and external pressure. Khamenei’s messaging reflects a broader theme in Iranian state communications: that perceived concessions or negotiations are tactical responses to enemy weakness or confusion, not signs of diminished resolve. Other Iranian officials have reiterated similar views, suggesting that ceasefire talks were undertaken only after adversaries signalled a willingness to halt their offensive operations.
In his tweet, Khamenei directly addressed what he sees as inconsistent behaviour by the United States, implying that the initial push for a ceasefire followed by diplomatic outreach was driven by fear and strategic miscalculation rather than sincerity:
