Tinubu Is Not Only Behaving Like A Southerner, He’s Behaving Like A Southwesterner—Baba-Ahmed Reacts

The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said the party is weighing several options ahead of future elections, including the possibility of backing a presidential candidate from southern Nigeria.

He made this known at a reception attended by Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections. The event was featured in a video published by Symfoni TV on Monday, May 4, 2026.

Speaking on the party’s direction, Baba-Ahmed said the PRP is evaluating all available choices, stressing that its decisions are guided by principles of justice and fairness. He noted that the party is increasingly inclined toward respecting prevailing public sentiment, which he said favors allowing a southerner to emerge as the next president.

He, however, pointed out that the final decision lies with the electorate, emphasizing that candidates from both the North and South are free to contest, and it is Nigerians who will ultimately decide through the ballot.

Baba-Ahmed described the party’s role as advisory, explaining that it seeks to guide aspirants in a way that promotes equity and national interest. He stressed that the country’s current situation requires collective sacrifice, adding that no effort is too great in the task of rebuilding Nigeria.

On the issue of endorsing a southern candidate, he stated that the party would not hesitate to do so if it serves the nation’s best interest. He clarified that supporting a candidate from the South does not sideline the North, noting that national unity remains essential.

He also cautioned against assumptions that all southern leadership would mirror that of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that leadership style varies by individual and regional context.
