According to Vanguard News, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Dele Momodu, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), brushed off claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar might utilise financial muscle to unfairly sway the outcome of the party’s upcoming presidential primary. The Ovation Magazine publisher shared these insights during an appearance on Channels Television’s “Morning Brief”, where he addressed the dynamics of managing the high-profile presidential aspirations within the party.
Momodu sought to draw a clear line between essential campaign financing and illicit bribery. He argued that substantial capital is a fundamental requirement for the logistical demands of a campaign and the management of election day activities.
To illustrate his point, he referenced the 2024 United States presidential race, observing that Kamala Harris managed to raise over a billion dollars, significantly outspending Donald Trump, yet she did not secure a victory. This, he noted, proves that having the most money does not automatically translate to winning.
The ADC chieftain further elaborated on the legitimate use of funds, suggesting that money is primarily needed to safeguard the integrity of the vote. He explained that resources are vital for monitoring polling stations and ensuring that results are protected from manipulation or theft.
In response to rumours about Atiku’s wealth, Momodu pointed out that the former vice president is a private businessman who has not held public office or controlled state resources since 2007.
He contrasted this with other political leaders, noting that figures like Asiwaju Bola Tinubu exert significant influence over Lagos, while Nyesom Wike maintains control over Rivers State.
Momodu concluded by dismissing the idea that Atiku possesses the kind of “billions of dollars” required to bribe delegates. He maintained that it was superior strategy, rather than raw spending, that allowed Atiku to defeat Wike during the 2022 Peoples Democratic Party primary.
He said, “Till today, Wike has not recovered because he was so sure that nobody could match him dollar for dollar.”
