As he celebrated his 65th birthday, former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, reflected on his personal journey, political aspirations and vision for Nigeria, attributing his enduring strength and commitment to public service to God’s grace.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun after returning from an overseas trip that took him to five cities across three countries within six days, Obi spoke extensively on the 2027 presidential election, the state of the nation, security challenges, his political party, the Tinubu administration and the source of his remarkable energy.
During the interview, Obi was also asked about his decision to choose Rabiu Kwankwaso as his vice-presidential candidate, with the interviewer seeking to know the considerations that informed the choice.
Responding, Obi said his position had always been clear, noting that he had repeatedly stated on his X (formerly Twitter) account that education would remain one of his top priorities. He explained that he believes education is the key to transforming society and argued that Nigeria must focus on developing its human capital. According to him, Rabiu Kwankwaso shares the same conviction on education, adding that their common vision created a strong synergy between them.
He said, “It is a very simple thing. Kwankwaso has the philosophy of pulling people out of poverty. I have the same philosophy. Kwankwaso believes in education. You cannot change the society without education.
“If you look at my X (formerly Twitter), I made it clear that I will emphasise on education. Education is going to change the society.
