According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, December 26, 2025, a security expert, Zagazola Makama, has said the recent airstrikes carried out by the United States military in Sokoto State by the authority of President Donald Trump were directed at the wrong location and had no impact on terrorist groups operating in Nigeria.
The United States military reportedly launched airstrikes on Christmas night, targeting suspected terrorists in parts of Sokoto State, an operation that triggered panic among residents in affected communities.
A viral video circulated on social media showed residents of Jabo community in Tambuwal Local Government Area fleeing in fear after one of the airstrikes reportedly landed in the area and went up in flames. As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the operation remain unclear, as no casualties or confirmed damage have been officially reported by authorities.
Reacting to the development in a post shared on X, Makama stated that the airstrikes landed in an area with no known terrorist presence and therefore had no effect on insurgent activities in the country. He wrote, “Those asking for our opinion on the U.S. strike in Sokoto. The bombs dropped in a relatively safe part of Sokoto State with no impact.”
Makama explained that the affected community has no history of extremist activity, stressing that the strike missed its intended target. “Jabo is a farming community under Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and it has no single record of ISIS or ISWAP activity at all,” he said.
While welcoming international support in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, Makama emphasized that such interventions must be accurately targeted to achieve results. “We welcome U.S. interventions to assist Nigeria, but certainly the Jabo community in Sokoto was a wrong target for ISWAP, Boko Haram, or ISIS, who are known to be operating mainly in North East Nigeria,” he stated.
He further noted that other extremist groups are also not active in the area affected by the strike. “Even JNIM, also known as Lakurawa, do not have any base in the North West. The area of the strikes is 98 percent Muslim population and does not pose any threat of Christian genocide. It is rather a case of bandits terrorizing Muslims,” Makama added.
Despite his criticism, the security expert said sustained military pressure on terrorist groups remains necessary. “The strikes, and more to come, are still a welcome development as they will send a very strong message,” he said.
